In 2015, Roland Reinstadler received a tip that at the end of the valley where he himself had grown up, there was still a mountain farmer living a completely original, traditional way of life. Roland initially had nothing more in mind than to take a portrait of this farmer. But his encounter with Siegfried—over 70 years old—along with his family and his authentic, unpretentious way of living, led Roland to visit Siegfried’s Gspellhof countless times over the course of six years.
What began as a portrait thus became a photographic preservation of the traditional way of life of mountain farmers—a monument to a time whose material existence is gradually fading. It is a story that began before Roland’s photographs, is retold through them, and will continue to be written after them—albeit in a different way.
