Leica – Momentum by Martina Trepczyk, Roots and Journey of Underwater Filming

Martina Trepczyk announced as new ambassador for the Leica SL3-S – a camera that effortlessly combines both film and photography. A perfect fit as the filmmaker, photographer, and artist shares her journey between worlds, between languages.

Her deepest sense of freedom emerges by the sea. She spent her childhood at her grandparents’ home on the Polish coast, where her fascination with nature began early.  She drew storyboards of sea creatures and anatomical cross-sections of animals giving birth. Before turning twelve, she experienced her first dive in Croatia with her father. Together, they encountered an octopus. A moment that became unforgettable.

It sparked a recurring dream: to see whales and orcas in the wild. For Martina, being underwater means liberation. It’s about becoming part of something larger, perhaps even sacred. It is an encounter with transcendence. Diving, for her, is both a technical practice and a spiritual calling. Silence holds a central role.  Not the absence of sound, but the quiet one discovers within. While the ocean may seem silent, the reef is alive, or at least it should be.

Ö1 - Aktivismus unter Wasser Trepczyk & Redl

Series “Menschenbilder Mittendrin” aired on Ö1 on 09.02.25.
Renowned jounalist, author and speaker Mari Lang interviewed award-winning filmmaker Martina Trepczyk and Christian Redl, multiple world champion and Austrian record holder in free diving.

Martina Trepczyk has always been engaged in visual arts. As a child with paper and pencil, and now with a professional film camera. At 15, she purchased her first camera. Since then, the Salzburg native with Polish roots, who studied film in London, has traveled the world to explore what others often avoid: from African slums to the depths of the ocean. In her current short film "Tigereyes," she tells the story of a hijab-wearing scuba dive instructor in the Maldives, a country where only a few women can swim. Feminism, sustainability, and wildlife conservation drive her work.

Mari Lang meets the young filmmaker at the Vienna premiere of "Tigereyes" to discuss her dives with tiger sharks and how films can change lives.
